Code of Conduct

Code of Conduct Policy (Revised 12/2023)

All players, staff, coaches and spectators are required to abide by this Code of Conduct, as well as all applicable laws and regulations of the Club, League, County, State and Federal authorities having jurisdiction.  It is understood that this code of conduct is applicable to all persons participating in events relating to Ashland Soccer Club, regardless of location. It is also understood that not all conduct requirements are explicitly written in this Code.  The Board reserves the right to determine whether conduct is aligned with the spirit of this Code and will take actions as deemed necessary.

 

Coach Code of Conduct:

By registering and volunteering as a coach, you agree to the following:

  1. Professionalism: I will always conduct myself in a professional manner, representing the soccer club with dignity, integrity, and respect.
  2. Player-Centric Approach: I will prioritize the development, well-being, and enjoyment of my players over winning at all costs.
  3. Skill Development: I will design and implement training sessions that focus on individual skill development, tactical understanding, and team cohesion, tailored to the age and ability level of the players.
  4. Positive Reinforcement: I will provide positive reinforcement and constructive feedback to my players, encouraging their effort, progress, and sportsmanship both on and off the field.
  5. Fair Play: I will instill in my players a strong sense of fair play, respect for opponents, officials, and teammates, and adherence to the laws and spirit of the game.
  6. Communication: I will maintain open and transparent communication with players, parents, club officials, and other coaches, ensuring that everyone is informed and involved in the team's activities and decisions.
  7. Sportsmanship: I will model good sportsmanship and encourage my players to do the same, applauding good play by both teams and showing respect for opponents, officials, and spectators.
  8. Player Rotation: I will strive to provide each player with meaningful playing time during games, recognizing their efforts in training and their commitment to the team.
  9. Conflict Resolution: In the event of conflicts or disagreements, I will handle them calmly, respectfully, and in accordance with the club's policies and procedures, seeking resolution through dialogue and mediation whenever possible.
  10. Continued Learning: I will continually seek to improve my coaching knowledge and skills through ongoing education, training courses, mentoring, and collaboration with other coaches.
  11. Safety: I will prioritize the safety and well-being of my players, ensuring that training sessions and games are conducted in a safe environment and that appropriate precautions are taken to prevent injuries. I will submit to a background check and complete/maintain SafeSport training and testing requirements as a condition of my role as Coach.
  12. Leadership: I will lead by example, demonstrating dedication, commitment, and passion for the game, and inspiring my players to strive for excellence both on and off the field.

Adherence to this code of conduct will help soccer coaches create a positive and enriching experience for their players, fostering the development of athletes and individuals.  It is understood that behavior not explicitly mentioned in this code of conduct is also subject to its principles and expectations. While every effort has been made to outline the key behaviors and values that are essential to our soccer club's culture, we recognize that situations may arise that require judgment and discretion. In such cases, all individuals associated with the club are expected to uphold the spirit of this code, demonstrating respect, integrity, and sportsmanship in all their actions and interactions.

 

 

 

Parent Code of Conduct:

By registering a player or attending a club-sanctioned event, you agree to the following:

  1. Supportive Behavior: I will support my child's participation in soccer in a positive and encouraging manner, respecting the decisions of coaches and officials.
  2. Respect: I will demonstrate respect for all players, coaches, officials, and spectators, regardless of the outcome of the game.
  3. Communication: I will maintain open and respectful communication with coaches and club officials, addressing any concerns or questions through appropriate channels.
  4. Sportsmanship: I will model good sportsmanship for my child, applauding good play by both teams and refraining from negative comments or behavior towards opponents, officials, or other parents.
  5. Player Development: I will prioritize my child's long-term development and enjoyment of the game over short-term success or winning at all costs.
  6. Boundaries: I will respect the boundaries between the coaching staff and players, refraining from coaching or instructing players during games or practices.
  7. Safety: I will ensure that my child is adequately prepared for training and games, including proper equipment and hydration, and that they understand the importance of fair play and injury prevention.
  8. Conflict Resolution: In the event of conflicts or disagreements, I will address them calmly and constructively, following the appropriate procedures outlined by the club.
  9. Education: I will strive to gain a deeper understanding of soccer so I can enhance my enjoyment of matches, contribute positively to discussions about the game, and better support my child's development as a player.

The conduct of parents directly impacts the atmosphere and effectiveness of our soccer club. Therefore, it is imperative that parents adhere to the highest standards of sportsmanship, respect, and positive support.

Parents are expected to maintain appropriate behavior at all times, both on and off the field. This includes refraining from negative comments or actions towards players, coaches, officials, and other parents, as well as demonstrating respect for the decisions of coaches and officials.

In cases where a parent's conduct is deemed detrimental to the club's values or the well-being of its members, the club reserves the right to take disciplinary action. Depending on the severity of the behavior, this may include suspension or termination of the parent's child as a player within the club.

This policy extends to guests of the parent or player as well as extended family, friends, etc.  Parents understand that it is their responsibility to inform guests or others of this policy and help assure conduct is compliant.

Player Code of Conduct:

  1. Respect: I will show respect to all players, coaches, officials, and spectators, regardless of differences in opinion, background, or skill level.
  2. Sportsmanship: I will embody the principles of fair play, honesty, and integrity in all aspects of the game. I will compete with passion and determination while adhering to the rules and spirit of soccer.
  3. Self-Discipline: I will maintain self-discipline at all times, controlling my emotions and actions, even in challenging situations. I understand that my behavior reflects not only on myself but also on my team and the reputation of the club.
  4. Commitment: I will demonstrate commitment to my team by attending all practices, games, and club events to the best of my ability. I understand the importance of regular training and teamwork in achieving our collective goals.
  5. Effort: I will give my best effort in every training session and game, pushing myself to improve my skills, fitness, and understanding of the game. I will support and encourage my teammates in their efforts as well.
  6. Accountability: I will take responsibility for my actions and decisions, accepting both victories and defeats with grace and humility. I will learn from mistakes and strive to continuously improve as a player and a person.
  7. Communication: I will communicate openly and respectfully with my coaches, teammates, and club officials, listening attentively and expressing myself clearly and honestly. I understand that effective communication is essential for the success of our team.
  8. Safety: I will prioritize my safety and the safety of others by following all instructions and guidelines provided by coaches and club officials. I will use proper equipment and techniques to minimize the risk of injury during training and games.
  9. Team Unity: I will contribute positively to the team environment, fostering camaraderie, trust, and mutual support among teammates. I will celebrate our successes together and work through challenges as a united group.
  10. Representing the Club: I understand that as a player of our soccer club, I am an ambassador for the organization both on and off the field. I will conduct myself in a manner that reflects positively on the club and its values at all times.

General Policies for All:

Harassment:

Our organization is committed to providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all individuals involved in our activities. Harassment of any kind is unacceptable and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

  1. Definition of Harassment: Harassment includes, but is not limited to, any unwelcome conduct, comments, gestures, or actions that are offensive, hostile, intimidating, or discriminatory based on a person's race, color, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or any other characteristic protected by law.
  2. Scope of Policy: This harassment policy applies to all individuals involved in our organization, including players, coaches, parents, officials, volunteers, spectators, and staff members, whether on or off the field, during practices, games, events, or other club-related activities.
  3. Prohibited Conduct: Examples of prohibited conduct include verbal abuse, derogatory remarks, insults, slurs, jokes, gestures, physical threats or intimidation, unwanted advances, sexual harassment, bullying, cyberbullying, stalking, or any other form of harassment.
  4. Reporting Procedures: Any individual who experiences or witnesses harassment is encouraged to report the incident promptly to a coach, club official, or designated individual responsible for handling such matters. Reports can be made verbally or in writing and will be kept confidential to the fullest extent possible.
  5. Investigation and Response: Upon receiving a report of harassment, the organization will conduct a prompt, thorough, and impartial investigation. The organization will take appropriate corrective action, which may include disciplinary measures against the perpetrator, depending on the severity of the offense and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  6. Non-Retaliation: Retaliation against individuals who report harassment or participate in an investigation is strictly prohibited and will result in disciplinary action. Individuals who report harassment or cooperate with an investigation will be protected from retaliation.
  7. Compliance: All members of the organization are expected to comply with this harassment policy and to uphold the principles of respect, fairness, and equality in all interactions. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, up to and including suspension or termination of membership.

Respect for Property, Grounds and Equipment:

  1. Property Care: All players, coaches, parents, officials, and spectators are expected to treat club property and facilities with care and respect. This includes equipment, uniforms, training facilities, fields, and any other club-owned assets. It is understood that our fields are owned by Hanover County and subject to all requirements, limitations, laws and regulations set forth by the Hanover Department of Parks and Recreation.
  2. Proper Use: Club property should only be used for its intended purposes and in accordance with club guidelines. Any misuse, vandalism, or unauthorized alteration of club property is strictly prohibited.
  3. Cleanliness: It is everyone's responsibility to help maintain cleanliness and orderliness in club facilities. This includes properly disposing of trash, keeping equipment organized, and promptly reporting any maintenance issues or safety concerns to club officials.
  4. Field Conservation: We encourage all members to be mindful of field conservation to promote and allow the highest quality playing surfaces to be maintained. Coaches and players are encouraged to avoid playing or practicing repeatedly in the same areas and limit activities which may disturb existing line paint.
  5. Field Closures: Field status is controlled by Hanover County Parks and Recreation. All participants are required to check field status prior to arrival.  AYSL will make every attempt to notify members if the fields close, however, members must assure they have verified the fields are not closed prior to arrival.  Use of the field when closed may be considered trespassing and may result in legal action by Hanover County.
  6. Personal Belongings: Members are responsible for the safekeeping of their personal belongings while on club premises or traveling to/from club events. The club is not liable for any loss or damage to personal property.
  7. Opponent Property/Equipment: All members are required to treat the property of our opponents with respect. No trash or belongings should be left behind.  Equipment should not be moved, altered or used improperly.

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Use:

Our soccer club is committed to promoting a healthy and safe environment for all participants, free from the influence of alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs. The use, possession, distribution, or sale of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal substances is strictly prohibited on club premises or during club-sanctioned events.

  1. Zero-Tolerance Policy: Our club maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards the use of alcohol, tobacco, or illegal drugs by players, coaches, parents, officials, and spectators at or during club events. Any violation of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action.
  2. Health and Safety: The use of alcohol, tobacco, or drugs can have serious health consequences, especially for young athletes. We are committed to promoting the well-being of our members and protecting them from the harmful effects of substance abuse.
  3. Role Modeling: As role models for our players, coaches, and parents must set a positive example by abstaining from the use of alcohol, tobacco, and drugs while participating in club activities. This includes refraining from smoking, vaping, or consuming alcohol in the vicinity of players or during club events.
  4. Consequences: Any member found to be in violation of this alcohol, tobacco, and drug use policy will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from the club, depending on the severity of the offense and the individual's willingness to seek help and comply with club policies.

Violence Prevention:

Our soccer club is dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, sportsmanship, and safety for all participants. Violence in any form has no place in our club and will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

  1. Zero-Tolerance Policy: Our club maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards violence, including physical altercations, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, or any behavior that poses a risk to the safety or well-being of others.
  2. Respectful Conduct: All players, coaches, parents, officials, and spectators are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and sportsmanlike manner at all times, both on and off the field. This includes treating opponents, teammates, referees, and spectators with courtesy and consideration.
  3. Conflict Resolution: In the event of conflicts or disagreements, we encourage open communication, respect for differing opinions, and the use of peaceful and constructive methods for resolving disputes. Violence or aggression is never an acceptable means of conflict resolution.
  4. Safety and Well-being: The safety and well-being of our members are paramount. We are committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone involved in club activities, and we will take all necessary measures to prevent and address instances of violence or misconduct.
  5. Consequences: Any individual found to have engaged in violent behavior will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion from the club, depending on the severity of the offense and the impact on others.
  6. Weapons: Possession of any weapon, including but not limited to firearms, knives, or any other potentially harmful objects, is strictly prohibited during any club-related activities, matches, or events regardless of the location. Violation of this policy will result in immediate disciplinary action, including potential suspension or expulsion from the club, and may also lead to legal consequences. This policy applies to any individual attending a club-related activity including but not limited to players, coaches, parents, officials, spectators or club staff.  This policy does not apply to law enforcement officers or security personnel authorized by AYSL, the County or the State.
