Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What age groups does ASC offer?
A: We offer recreational programs for u6 through u19. The "u" means "under", so u6 is for players under the age of six at time of signup (see our age determination link on the right). Travel offerings are limited and based on interest by players and coach availability. Tryouts are held in April for a year-long team commitment.
Q: Where does ASC play?
A: All practices and home games are played at the Poor Farm Park soccer fields
Q: How do I know if practice is canceled?
A: Practices are cancelled ONLY when the fields are closed by Hanover County. Normally, the decision is not made until 2pm-3pm on weekday afternoons. Coaches will be notified if fields are closed and coaches will then notify their teams of the cancellations. If in doubt, feel free to contact the Hanover County Parks field status hotline at (804) 365-4698.
Q: How do I know if games are canceled?
A: Similar to practices, games are ONLY cancelled when the fields are closed by the County. Normally, the decision is not made until 8am on weekend mornings. Coaches will be notified if fields are closed and coaches will then notify their teams of the cancellations. If in doubt, feel free to contact the Hanover County Parks field status hotline at (804) 365-4698 (for home games at Poor Farm Park). ***For games scheduled at facilities outside Hanover County, ASC coaches will notify players upon receiving notification of game cancellations. ***
Q: What League(s) do Ashland teams play in?
A: Our Early Development programs, u6-u8, are trained as a group. Weekly games are played on Sundays at 1pm. New teams are formed on a weekly basis for fun and balanced in-house games. Our u10s and older recreation teams currently participate in the RVA Cross League against recreation teams from around the Richmond metro region. Cross league games are played on Saturday & Sundays throughout the Fall & Spring seasons. Our travel teams (u12 - u19) play in the NPL South.
Q: How much does it cost to play for ASC?
A: We are committed to offering high quality programs at the lowest possible prices.
Recreational Divisions (all ages)
$120
Travel Divisions (all ages)
$1,250
(Financial aid is also available - see below)
Q: What equipment do players need?
A: Players should always wear soccer cleats, shin guards and athletic clothing. Players should always bring water and a soccer ball. u6 Size 3 | u7-u12 Size 4 | u13+ Size 5
Q: Are uniforms included with the registration fees?
A: Uniforms are an additional cost. However, we work with our vendors to assure costs are kept as low as possible.
Recreational players are required to purchase two jerseys (home and away) from our supplier (soccer.com). They will also require at least one pair of solid black shorts (no pockets) and solid black soccer socks which can be purchased from various sources. Small emblems or logos are permitted, but in general, socks and shorts should be solid black. Recreational players will use their jerseys for as many seasons as they will fit. Slight variations are expected as our vendors may revise their offerings but in general, our focus will be on accurate colors and individual numbers. Slight styling differences in jerseys of new and returning players are permissible. Jerseys are currently running at roughly $35 each so players new to the club can expect an initial cost of roughly $70-$80 for jerseys, plus the cost of any other required items purchased seperately (shorts, socks, cleats, shin guards, etc).
Travel players will have assigned and required kits which will be purchased through our supplier (soccer.com). Uniform kits are anticipated to cycle every two years. *New players joining midway through this span may be required to purchase a kit after their first year.*
Q: Does ASC have travel teams?
A: Yes! Our u12+ teams play in the VA Premier Soccer League (NPL South).
Q: How are coaches selected?
A: We prefer coaches which are invested in the advancement of the players, team and the Club. Often, coaches are parents, family members or members of the local community, such as college players in the off-season. We encourage parents to step up, even if they're not highly experienced in soccer. ASC has compiled coaching manuals and informational resources to help coaches focus on the delivery of development, and not necessarily the development of training plans. These resources help align the player development path from u6 through u19.
Coaches are recruited by the Director of Operations and approved by the Board. All staff, paid or volunteer, are required to submit and pass a background screening, and complete/maintain SafeSport training.
Q: How long as ASC been around for?
A: AYSL was founded in 1982 and re-branded in 2025 after establishing a travel soccer program. The club first played at Gandy Elementary School before clearing trees and grading land to build new soccer fields at Poor Farm Park. When the club first arrived at PFP, games were played on a field near the amphitheater in the rear of the park. The current fields were developed thanks to a big community effort of Ashland Soccer Club members in partnership with Hanover County Parks and Recreation. We have been playing there ever since!
Q: How can I be more involved?
A: We're glad you asked!!! Ashland Soccer Cclub is always in need of coaches, team managers (team parents), board members and committee members. From coaching to fundraising, we have a spot for you, regardless of your soccer experience or knowledge! Send us an email and we'll get you involved! Ask about our rebates for coaches!
Q: Does ASC offer financial assistance?
A: Yes. ASC offers a limited amount of financial assistance to families in need. To request financial aid, please complete this financial aid form, and email it to our registrar at info@aysl.org The Board will evaluate the request and the applicant will be notified of their decision.
