U6 Rules
The U6 division is intended as an introduction to the sport. Games are focused on player development, understanding of the game, rules and fundamentals. Players should receive positive encouragement from coaches and spectators and always remember to balance the spirit of competition with respect and sportsmanship.
Field Size (yards): 20×30
Goal Size (feet): 4x6
Ball Size: Size 3 (Balls used for games shall be properly inflated).
Game Length: Four 10-minute quarters (2-minute breaks between 1st & 2nd and 3rd & 4th quarters. 5-minute halftime). No stoppage time. No additional/overtime.
Uniforms (Recreational Teams Only): Home teams will wear White jerseys, solid black shorts and black socks. Away teams will wear green jerseys, black shorts and black socks.
Referees: No certified officials, coaches act as referee and may be within the limits of play during the game to help coach, encourage and officiate the game. Coaches should attempt to cover one half of the field for calls.
Offsides: Offsides is not called.
Throw-Ins: No throw ins. Players may dribble or pass in from the line. This is known as "kick-ins".
Kick-Ins: Kick-ins are awarded to the opposing team when a player causes the ball to entirely cross the touchline.
Goal Kicks: If the team attempting to score a goal kicks the ball over the goal line outside the goal posts, the opposing team puts the ball back into play with a goal kick. Opposing team must be in their half of the field for all goal kicks. Players of the team taking the goal kick must be at least 10 feet away from the ball. Opposing players may cross the midfield line only after the ball is (1) touched by a receiving player in their own half or (2) the ball crosses the midfield line.
Substitutions: Allowed any time the ball if out of play – with the permission of the coach (referee).
Start of Play: Kick offs are used at the beginning of each quarter and after each goal. All players must remain on their half of the field until the ball is kicked. The team taking the kickoff shall alternate at the beginning of each quarter. Players switch sides at the beginning of the third quarter.
Free Kicks: All free kicks are indirect (ball must be touched by a player other than the kick taker before a goal may be scored. If the ball enters the goal without touching another player, a goal kick is awarded.)
Corner Kick: If the team defending the goal touches the ball last before it crosses the goal line, the attacking team puts the ball back into play with an indirect kick from the corner of the field.
Slide Tackles: Not allowed.
Heading the Ball: Not allowed. If a player intentionally plays the ball with his/her head, an indirect kick is awarded to the opposing team. If a ball contacts a player's head unintentionally, play is stopped and restarted with a drop-ball. Concussion protocol shall be followed.
Goalkeepers: No goalkeepers – no player is allowed to defend the goal area. Players should not be inside the goal arc. Play should be allowed to continue into the goal area but no player may be within the goal area intending to defend or score while not actively engaged in the play.
Miscellaneous: Only coaches and players are allowed on the field. No coaches or spectators behind the goal or goal line.
U8 Rules
The U8 division is intended as an advanced introduction to the sport. Games are focused on player development, understanding of the game, rules and fundamentals. Players should receive positive encouragement from coaches and spectators and always remember to balance the spirit of competition with respect and sportsmanship.
*Rules of the U6 division shall apply except as modified below.*
Throw-Ins: Throw-ins are awarded to the opposing team when a player causes the ball to entirely cross the touchline. Repeat throw-ins shall be allowed until it is correct to encourage player development. The coach may provide assistance or allow assistance from the sideline. There is no penalty for an improper throw-in. The throw is re-taken if the ball does not enter the field of play.
